What is Color Picker?

A color picker lets users select a color visually and read its value in multiple formats — HEX, RGB, HSL, and CMYK. It is built on the browser's native <input type="color"> control (which opens the OS color dialog) and supplements it with live format conversions. Designers and developers use it to grab exact color values from a palette, match brand colors, and copy paste-ready values into CSS, SVG, or design tools.

How It Works

The native color input returns a 7-character HEX string (#RRGGBB). The tool parses this into red, green, and blue channels, then derives HSL (via the max/min/average method) and CMYK (via the standard RGB-to-CMYK transform) for display. Each format is shown in a copyable field. Optional eyedropper support uses the EyeDropper API where available to sample a pixel from anywhere on screen. All computation is local.

Common Use Cases

  • Matching brand guidelines — pick the exact HEX value from a logo or style guide
  • Sampling colors from a screenshot — use the eyedropper to grab a pixel's value directly
  • Generating CSS variables — copy a color in the format your stylesheet expects
  • Building accessible palettes — read RGB/HSL to compute contrast against a background

Technical Details

Input: native <input type="color"> (sRGB, no alpha). EyeDropper API (Chrome 95+) samples screen pixels. Output formats: HEX (#rrggbb), RGB (r,g,b 0-255), HSL (h 0-360, s/l 0-100%), CMYK (c,m,y,k 0-100%). Color space: sRGB. Alpha is not supported by the native picker; use a separate RGBA tool for transparency. Conversion formulas follow the W3C CSS Color Model.

FAQ

Is my color data uploaded?

No. The color picker works entirely in your browser using the native color input and Canvas API.

What formats are provided?

HEX, RGB, HSL, and CMYK values are all shown for the selected color, ready to copy.

Can I pick colors from anywhere on my screen?

Yes, in browsers that support the EyeDropper API (Chrome 95+ and Edge 95+). Click the eyedropper button to sample a pixel from anywhere on your display. Firefox and Safari do not yet support this API, so the native color picker is used as a fallback.
